INTRODUCTION
TMC Institute of Learning (TMCIL) having the registered office at 39/3, Canal West Road,
Kolkata 700 004, has been established in 2007. TMCIL is an academic wing of TMC group
which is engaged in the applied fields of Heat Treatment, Non Destructive Testing (NDT)
and Welding of Metals for more than three decades. Core areas of activities of TMC group
include Heat Treatment of Metals, development of heat treatable metallurgical products for
critical operations such as spiral knives for leather shaving, high tensile studs, spares for
turbines of power plants, Non Destructive testing (NDT) of metals, Decay Characterization of
boilers and turbines in power plants, critical equipment and pipe lines in petro-chemical &
gas industries, Repair and Reclamation of Horton sphere and Bullet etc., TMCIL is providing
Industrial Training for individuals of variety of academic and industrial background starting
from school drop outs to core technical professionals based on the experiences gained by
TMC group during the course of its journey.
OWNERSHIP OF THE INSTITUTE
The Institution was formed in 2007 as mentioned earlier due to the initiative of a highly
enthusiastic and professional group named TMC Group. TMC Group in the capacity of
founder of TMCIL had given initial assistance to run the institute and also provided
infrastructure and equipment support to the institute. A Trustee Board has been formed and
Trust Deed was registered in the office of Registrar of Assurances, Kolkata on October 12,
2007.
MAJOR ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES
Within the short span of its existence, TMCIL has already established credential as an able
vocational training service provider. TMCIL is presently accredited by Jadavpur University to
run a six months job oriented vocational course on Industrial Practices with specialization on
Non Destructive Testing of Metals and Heat Treatment of Metals. The course is also
accepted by Department of Labor, Government of West Bengal for grant of financial
incentives to the candidates taking up the course under Skill Development Scheme for
registered job seekers. From 2018-19 Welding of metals is going to be added.
TMCIL has already undertaken several short term academic programmes in recent past in
association with Jadavpur University, IIT (Kharagpur), Kalyani Govt. Engineering College
and professional bodies like Indian Institute of Metals, Association of Engineers, etc.. Out of
the many short term programmes conducted earlier by TMCIL, special mention may be
made to the one short term course conducted in association with IIT, Kharagpur in August,
2009. This course was attended by a substantial number of technical executives from
reputed organizations all over the country. At the end of the course participants were issued
participation certificates from IIT, Kharagpur and ASNT Level II certificates in Ultrasonic and
magnetic particle testing. TMCIL was entrusted by WBMDFC to conduct training courses for
students of minority communities. In recent time TMCIL has trained around 60 students of
mechanical engineering department (sixth / seventh semester) of Brainware University and
St Mary’s Engineering College, Barasat in the fields of NDT, Welding and Heat Treatment.
Earlier a group of students from sixth semester of Aliah University had undergone vocational
training in NDT. Another group of students from same University also participated in
Vocational training in Heat Treatment of metals.
TMCIL has also trained around 150 engineers of petroleum & power sector in the field of
NDT, Material characterization & its weldability, Decay Characterization from 2015-16.
TMCIL is also conducting certification courses for American Society of Nondestructive
Testing (ASNT) & Indian Institute of Welding (IIW).
OBJECTIVES OF TRAINING PROGRAMMES IN TMCIL
The main objective of the training Programmes on Non Destructive Testing of Metals (NDT),
welding and Heat treatment of Metals is to prepare students for entry-level positions in the
organizations who are in the business of Non Destructive Testing, Welding and Heat-
treatment of Metals. After completion of the training a trainee in the institute will be able to:
1) Demonstrate ability to measure with the help of various measuring instruments and
gauges.
2) Impact the bottom line in an industrial environment by assuming higher level of
quality consciousness.
3) Interpret relevant data / information.
4) Adapt themselves with any change in traditional practice of working.
5) Develop entrepreneurship.
